| The Austin Street
Centre offers emergency shelter and pastoral care to homeless people
in Dallas. Each day, the center helps up to 350 (or more) men,
women, and children.
You might be surprised to learn
that of the male population at Austin Street, 47% have jobs and 33%
are disabled (as of January 5, 2003). Part of the mission of
Austin Street is to help these people in need so that they might be
better able to make responsible choices and changes in their lives.
St. Andrew's is one of 120
different churches in the Dallas Metroplex (including those of the
Episcopal Diocese of Dallas) that provide food and clothing
donations to Austin Street. Each month we feed between 325 and 400
people. At our monthly visit, we provide a hearty main course,
sandwiches, as well as a beverage. We also provide disposable
bowls/plates, silverware, and cups – we go fully
equipped!
Members of our youth group often
help out in this outreach ministry.

How you can help:
St. Andrew's provides the meal at
Austin Street on the second Sunday of every month. Here are
some ways that you can help:
- Sandwiches – a loaf or
two of sandwiches each month would really be appreciated.
Ideal sandwiches are ham and cheese, turkey and cheese, and
peanut butter and jelly. Please individually wrap each
sandwich and then place all of the sandwiches in the bread
bag. It would help us if you could label the outside of
the bread bag with the type of sandwich. Please deliver
the sandwiches to the parish hall by 5:00pm on the second Sunday
of the month.
- Volunteers
– we need volunteers to help us cook meals, sort and pack the
food into the vehicles, and also to help serve the food at
Austin Street
- Monetary
donations – your donations help to fund this important
outreach ministry
- Clothing donations
– Each month we also deliver donations of clothing for Austin
Street
- Other food donations –
Please contact Bob Denton if you have food that you think might
be useful for our Austin Street ministry, such as a ham
